New!  Pity The Poor Pick by Mitch Holder

The Colorful Saga of Vintage
Celluloid Guitar Plectrums

Dear Guitar Player:

The very fact that you play gives you a unique appreciation of guitar picks - those seemingly insignificant little items you always lose. They are, of course, the very tool that transfers your energy and inspiration from your fingers to the strings. The sound effect you get depends as much on your selection of picks, as it does on your choice of strings, amps, effects or guitar. You can play the same piece with different picks and get entirely different sounds. Many artists keep several types and gauges available for varied sound effects or playing styles. So the choice is a very significant one, and you must experiment constantly..

Here at D’Andrea we’ve been experimenting and innovating for 80 years! Yes, that was B.R.

(before Rock). It’s hard to imagine the success of Rock without a plentiful supply of good guitar picks!

The ones we originally made in the ‘20’s were used on mandolins, banjos and
acoustic guitars. The early blues and jazz greats used our picks back then. All the greats use our picks now. We make custom imprinted picks for about 90% of the touring artists and among our endorsees are Al DiMeola, Lee Ritnour, Richie Sambora, and Slayer - a real cross section of musical styles. The history of D’Andrea is the history of twentieth century music and of that very essential guitar playing tool, the pick.

DID YOU KNOW that it takes at least three days to make a celluloid pick, or any pick manufactured from sheet plastic? The plastic comes in various gauged sheets, about 2'x5'. It is slit into strips, punched out into a variety of shapes, and then tumbled in at least three different mixtures to de-burr it, smooth it, clean and polish it. Then it gets sorted, and a logo or name printed on one or both sides. It's then counted, bagged and shipped, to a store in New Jersey, Bon Jovi's gig in Australia or a Kiss concert in Japan.

D'Andrea, for 80 years of music gear, the one to pick!

Sincerely,

Tony D'Andrea

The Colorful Saga of Vintage Celluloid Guitar Plectrums
by Will Hoover

An eye-catching look back at the vast variety and fascinating history of vintage celluloid guitar picks - kaleidoscopic, translucent celluloid picks in stunning colors. "Will Hoover has taken what you might imagine to be a mundane subject and made it fascinating."

This little book examines a subject dear to all guitar players - Classic Celluloid guitar pick. In a pleasant and humorous style, Will Hoover traces the fascinating story of the development , evolution, and importance of Picks. He even has a chapter on the collecting of vintage and entertainers' picks, including the current market value of some of the more famous musicians.

The book makes considerable reference to Luigi D'Andrea, the originator of the first commercially available celluloid picks, and the D'Andrea manufacturing Co. which today continues to be the largest producer of celluloid picks.

It's fun reading and a book every musician would enjoy. -- Billboard Magazine
